| The Teacher |
| The teacher is always the best resource. The quality of children’s phonics learning depends on the quality of the teaching, not the cost of the resource. The best way to resource yourself as a teacher is to be sure that you understand what phonics is, and how to teach it effectively as part of your balanced literacy programme. By attending training, you are investing in yourself as your best teaching resource. |
| |
| Story Books |
Useful books for phonics at Stage 1 are those with strong rhythmical or alliterative language and books with rhyming text or poems. |
| |
| Sound discrimination |
Ensure your children have access to a variety of puppets and musical instruments to encourage them to become familiar with, create and hear a range of sounds. Sound track games where children listen to everyday noises on a CD and then use pictures to show the sound being made are excellent for assisting with environmental sound discrimination. |
| |
| Phonics Schemes |
There are many phonic schemes available. Popular schemes in New Zealand classrooms include Jolly Phonics, Sunshine Phonics, Kiwi Phonics, Letterland, Letter Links and Superphonics. After attending training, you will know which one, if any, will be useful for you. These schemes are available from many children’s bookshops and educational resource providers. |

| |
