"Phonemic awareness is fundamental to early success in reading and writing … An understanding of phonics also underpins children's literacy learning. Children need to learn, through deliberate, focused instruction, which letters represent which sounds."

stage 4 reading step 1Phonics Training for Primary Schools equips teachers and teacher aides with all that is needed to introduce phonics for junior classes. The aim is to empower children with the skills and confidence they need to achieve early independence in their reading and writing.

Teachers are taught how to introduce phonics using a clearly structured programme, compatible with any well-known phonic scheme, stage 2 hearing - step 4teaching lessons that are:

  • well-paced
  • interactive
  • short
  • regular
  • easy to resource
  • enjoyed by all

and that follow the basic phonic teaching steps which are:

  • hear
  • read
  • write
  • revise

Aimed at adults working with children age 5-7, the training is also invaluable for all stage 4 writing - step 2teachers and teacher aides working further up the school with any child challenged by spelling in writing and decoding in reading.

The training covers:

  • basic theory
  • the 7 stages of phonics
  • lesson plans
  • assessment
  • resources

Basic theory

  • what is phonics?
  • what do we need to teach?
  • when do we need to teach it?
  • the role of phonics in literacy development
  • pronunciation
  • terminology
  • how to hear phonemes

The 7 stages of phonics

  • understanding each of the seven stages of phonological development
  • being able to assess any piece of children’s writing on the phonics continuum

Lesson plans

How to:

  • hear and discriminate sounds (environmental, instrumental, speech)
  • rhyme, hear rhythm and alliteration
  • hear all the sounds in a word
  • hear, read and write all the phonemes

Assessment

Informal

  • how to analyse children’s writing

Formal

  • assessment activities for each stage
  • guidelines
  • how to record progress

Resources

By the end of the training, teachers will know where to start their class in phonics, how to teach at any stage, how to check that progress is being made and how to resource phonics.
