Early Words is a programme that will help you teach your child or pupil how to learn and quickly recall a basic reading vocabulary of high frequency words.
There are only one hundred words which make up half of all reading. Words such as ‘I’, ‘the’, ‘like’ and so on are called ‘high frequency’ or ‘sight’ words. Children need to know these words instantly, by sight, without sounding out. (Though of course they will still need phonics to help them read non-sight words). The quicker a child acquires this basic sight word vocabulary, the easier reading will be.
The Early Words programme teaches children at their level, one to one, in a short daily fun lesson where not only a basic sight vocabulary is learnt, but children learn how to learn. Teachers report that children who have undertaken the Early Words programme are more likely to be focused on and understand many conventions of print and work with more fluency when compared with children who have not had the programme.
Early Words is ideal for parents, New Entrant teachers or anyone working with learners who are at the beginning stages of reading.
